I was having a lovely weekend of house cleaning, laundry, painting, enjoying the amazing fall weather with Huey, and then I decided to take a shower. Let's start with the pre-shower stuff....
| I painted the last coat of primer in the bathroom - looking good!! |
| All that's left before color is right at the ceiling ... I'm waiting on my mom for that... |
| I even took down the light fixture so that we could buy a new one... well Charlie took it down after I threw a fit about how we were going to have to hire an electrician because there were just too many wires. |
| I LOOOOOOVE FALL!!! I'm so glad it's here finally. |
| Huey loves fall too, especially the part that involves sleeping on the back of the couch in the sun. |
So, I'm enjoying the progress of the bathroom, Huey, and the arrival of Fall weather. I had to take the lid off the toilet so that I could paint as far behind it as possible. When I took it off, I was thoroughly disgusted at how nasty the seal part was. So I laid it in the bath tub and
cleaned bleached it. I was ready to take a shower, eat some dinner, and enjoy some couch time. Fast forward to the shower... (meaning leave out all the time it takes to clean out paint brushes and close paint cans, blah blah blah). Our bathroom is on the back of the house - the east side of the house - so in the evenings as the sun starts to set, our bathroom can become a sun room/sauna thanks to our otherwise awesome garden tub window. It dawns on me at this time as I'm standing in the shower, just how disgusting our shower is. I wondered aloud how I had never seen how disgusting it was. Oh maybe because I usually take a shower at 5:45 am in the dark so I don't wake Charlie because one of the french doors to our bathroom can't be shut all the way or the dog cries. Not to mention that I'm not usually
awake until about 7:05 am as I'm walking into my classroom. So for the first time since we moved in - I can fully see how DISGUSTING, GUT WRENCHING the shower actually looks. See for yourself:
| This is the little button thing on the shower faucet - yikes! |
| Double Yikes! |
| This just scares me... what the heck were the previous owners thinking?! |
So instead of couch time - we had Home Depot time. I also found out while cleaning the whole shower with AJAX that the stripping at the bottom of the shower door is practically non existent which allows the water to slowly seep out onto the bath mat. Awesome. But, my lovely friends at Home Depot know all the answers to every question I could even pretend to want to ask. So I find a friendly person in orange in the "Bath" section at Home Depot. He knows exactly what I'm talking about. It's actually in the weather stripping section - but you have to know what the "notch" at the top looks like in order to buy the right type. I made a guess (wrong guess) and then we went over to flooring for a grout cleaning brush, grout cleaner, and then my friend in orange says that you have to seal the grout again after you clean it - such smart people at Home Depot. After some dinner at our favorite mexican restaurant (Poblano Grill) we headed home to work.
| The button thing from the shower faucet (and two from the sink faucet) got a bath in 1 part bleach, 3 parts water |
| Our new grout cleaning tools |
| Weather stripping just for a shower door (pay no attention to the fact that it is the wrong kind, and I will have to go back for the right kind tomorrow) |
It was quite a feat to get the old seal off the shower door, and I can't tell you how many times I thought I was going to vomit - DISGUSTING. Here is what was left of the old shower seal and how vomit-inducing it was.
| You can kind of tell from the picture above that the seal is supposed to be about 1 1/2 " long - this one is about 1/4 " long... I don't know what happened to it, it looked like it got eaten by a hungry wolf |
| That has to be mold... and you can tell from the picture of the new seal that it is supposed to be CLEAR not orangeish black. It was all I could do to pick it up without vomiting. |
I didn't have time to clean and seal the grout in the shower, but when I do, I will definitely post pictures. Here is the greatly improved button thing on the shower faucet. The black/silver marks are scratches and can't be cleaned... looks a little better.
| After |
| Before - Mostly soap scum and moldy water build up |
I'm slowly feeling better about where I go to get "clean" every day! Just a few more things to do and then it should be looking sparkly clean :)

That WAS pretty nasty. My excuse when our shower gets gross is because I can't see it (and I don't wear my glasses in the shower!)
